Early Life and Career

Paul Dike was born in Enugu, Nigeria, on December 5, 1926. He attended Government College, Umuahia, and later joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1948. He received his pilot training in the United Kingdom and served in the RAF for six years.

In 1956, Dike returned to Nigeria and joined the Nigerian Air Force. He was one of the first pilots in the Nigerian Air Force, and he quickly rose through the ranks. In 1962, he was appointed Chief of Air Staff, becoming the first Nigerian to hold this position.

Chief of Air Staff

As Chief of Air Staff, Dike oversaw the rapid expansion of the Nigerian Air Force. He established new air bases and acquired new aircraft, including the MiG-17 and MiG-21 fighter jets. He also played a key role in the development of the Nigerian Air Force's training programs.

Dike was a strong advocate for the use of air power in military operations. He believed that air power could be used to deter aggression, protect Nigerian airspace, and support ground forces. He also believed that air power could be used to promote economic development and provide humanitarian assistance.

Later Career

Dike retired from the Nigerian Air Force in 1971. He went on to serve as a senior advisor to the Nigerian government on aviation matters. He also served as a consultant to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Dike died in Lagos, Nigeria, on January 12, 2019. He was 92 years old.
