Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri, in 1902. He moved to Cleveland, Ohio, with his mother and stepfather when he was a child. He attended Central High School in Cleveland, where he began to write poetry.

After graduating from high school, Hughes attended Columbia University in New York City. He left Columbia after two years to travel to Europe and Africa. He returned to the United States in 1924 and published his first book of poetry, The Weary Blues, in 1926.

Hughes's work was widely praised by critics, and he quickly became one of the leading figures of the Harlem Renaissance. He published several more books of poetry, including Fine Clothes to the Jew (1927),The Dream Keeper (1932),and Montage of a Dream Deferred (1951).

In addition to his poetry, Hughes also wrote fiction, plays, and essays. His novel Not Without Laughter (1930) was a critical and commercial success. He also wrote several plays, including Mulatto (1935) and Tambourines to Glory (1958).

Hughes was a lifelong activist for social justice. He was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). He also wrote several essays and speeches on the need for racial equality.

Hughes died in New York City in 1967. He is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.

Hughes's work continues to be read and studied today. He is considered one of the most important American poets of the 20th century.
