Morse was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts, on April 27, 1791. He was the son of a Congregational minister and a descendant of the early Puritan settlers of New England.

Morse showed a talent for art at an early age. He studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in London and became a successful portrait painter.

In the early 1830s, Morse became interested in electricity and its potential for communication. He began experimenting with different ways to send messages over wires.

The first Morse code message was sent from Washington, D.C., to Baltimore, Maryland, on May 24, 1844. The message was "What hath God wrought?"

Morse's invention quickly spread around the world. By the end of the 19th century, there were Morse code telegraph lines in every major city.

Morse's invention had a profound impact on the world. It revolutionized the way people communicated and helped to bring about the age of modern communication.

Morse died in New York City on April 2, 1872. He is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
