In the early 19th century, a new breed of explorer emerged in the American West: the naturalist. These men and women were driven by a desire to understand the natural world, and they played a pivotal role in shaping our understanding of the American West.

- Ferdinand V. Hayden, who led a series of expeditions to the Yellowstone region in the 1870s and helped to establish Yellowstone National Park.
