Biddy Mason was an enslaved woman who escaped to freedom and became a prominent advocate for civil rights in California. Born into slavery in Mississippi in 1818, she was brought to California by her enslaver in 1851. After several failed attempts to escape, she finally succeeded in 1856 and made her way to San Francisco.

In San Francisco, Mason worked as a midwife and nurse, helping to deliver over 300 babies. She also became involved in the abolitionist movement, speaking out against slavery and helping to organize the Underground Railroad. In 1863, she helped to found the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in San Francisco, which became a center for the black community.
