Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 19, 1809. His father, David Poe, Jr., a struggling actor, abandoned the family when Poe was three, and his mother, Elizabeth Arnold Poe, died a year later from consumption. Poe was then taken in by John Allan, a wealthy tobacco merchant, and his wife, Frances. The Allans provided Poe with a privileged upbringing, but their relationship was often strained.
Poe attended the University of Virginia for a year, but he was forced to leave due to lack of funds. He then embarked on a brief military career, but he was discharged after only two years. Poe then turned to writing as a way to make a living. He published his first collection of poems, Tamarlane and Other Poems, in 1827, but it was largely ignored.
In 1835, Poe married his cousin, Virginia Clemm, who was only 13 years old at the time. The marriage was a happy one, but it was also marked by tragedy. Virginia died of tuberculosis in 1846, and Poe was devastated by her loss. He wrote some of his most famous works in the years that followed, including "The Raven" and "The Tell-Tale Heart.
Poe's death in 1849 remains shrouded in mystery. He was found delirious on the streets of Baltimore, Maryland, and he died a few days later at the age of 40. The cause of his death is unknown, but there are many theories, including alcohol poisoning, rabies, and a brain tumor.
Poe's life and death have been the subject of much speculation and debate. He was a complex and troubled figure, but his work has had a profound impact on American literature. His tales of mystery and the macabre continue to fascinate and horrify readers to this day.
