By Loung Ung

Growing Up Under the Khmer Rouge is a harrowing account of survival under one of the most brutal regimes in history. Loung Ung was only five years old when the Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia. For the next four years, she and her family were forced to live in a labor camp, where they were subjected to starvation, torture, and death.

Loung Ung's story is a testament to the human spirit's ability to survive even the most unimaginable horrors. Despite the unimaginable suffering she endured, Loung Ung never gave up hope. She found ways to laugh and play, even in the darkest of times. And she never forgot the importance of family and love.
