Robert Smalls was born into slavery in Beaufort, South Carolina, in 1839. From a young age, he showed signs of intelligence and determination. He learned to read and write, and he worked hard to improve his skills. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Smalls saw an opportunity to escape to freedom.
In May 1862, Smalls was working as a deckhand on the Confederate ship Planter. The ship was docked in Charleston Harbor, and Smalls knew that if he could sail it out of the harbor, he could deliver it to the Union Navy. However, the plan was risky. If Smalls was caught, he would be severely punished.
Undeterred, Smalls gathered a group of fellow slaves and planned his escape. On the night of May 12, 1862, Smalls and his crew boarded the Planter and sailed it out of Charleston Harbor. They flew a white flag of surrender, and when they reached the Union Navy, they were greeted as heroes.
Smalls's escape was a major propaganda victory for the Union. It showed that slaves were willing to fight for their freedom, and it helped to turn the tide of the war. Smalls went on to serve in the Union Navy, and he eventually became a captain. After the war, he returned to South Carolina and became a successful businessman and politician.
The Escape of Robert Smalls is a thrilling and inspiring story of a man who overcame adversity to achieve his dreams. It is a story that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
