The Star-Spangled Banner

The Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem of the United States. The song was written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 during the War of 1812. Key was inspired to write the song after seeing the American flag flying over Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland, after it had been bombarded by the British.

The Star-Spangled Banner is a patriotic song that celebrates the American flag and the United States. The song is often sung at sporting events, patriotic gatherings, and other special occasions.

Francis Scott Key

Key was born in Frederick, Maryland, in 1779. He studied law at St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland, and was admitted to the bar in 1801. Key practiced law in Georgetown, Maryland, and later in Washington, D.C.

In 1814, Key was sent to Baltimore to negotiate the release of a friend who had been arrested by the British. Key arrived in Baltimore on September 12, 1814, the day after the British had begun bombarding Fort McHenry.

Key watched the bombardment from a ship in the harbor. He was inspired to write the Star-Spangled Banner after seeing the American flag flying over Fort McHenry the next morning.
