A Black And White Photo Of Olga Benario, A Young Woman With Short Hair And A Determined Expression. Olga: Revolutionary And Martyr Fernando Morais

Fernando Morais's latest book, "Olga Revolutionary and Martyr," is a captivating biography of one of the most remarkable women of the twentieth century: Olga Benario Prestes. Born in Munich, Germany, in 1908, Olga joined the Communist Party at a young age and quickly became a leading member of the party's underground resistance against the Nazis.

In 1934, Olga was arrested by the Gestapo and sentenced to eight years in prison. While in prison, she met and fell in love with Luiz Carlos Prestes, a Brazilian Communist leader who had been imprisoned for his role in a failed uprising. Together, Olga and Luiz became symbols of resistance against fascism.

In 1938, Olga was released from prison and deported to Brazil. However, her troubles were not over. The Brazilian government, under the dictatorship of Getúlio Vargas, was hostile to communism, and Olga was soon arrested again. She was tortured and imprisoned for several years before being released in 1945.

After her release, Olga continued to fight for social justice. She worked with her husband to organize the Brazilian Communist Party and to promote the rights of women and workers. In 1975, Olga was arrested again by the military dictatorship that had come to power in Brazil. She was tortured and killed in prison in 1976.

Fernando Morais's biography of Olga Benario is a moving and inspiring account of a woman who dedicated her life to fighting for a better world. Morais's writing is clear and concise, and he provides a vivid portrait of Olga's life and times. The book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of Latin America, the Holocaust, or the struggle for social justice.

Olga's Childhood and Early Life

Olga Benario was born in Munich, Germany, on February 12, 1908. Her parents were Jewish immigrants from Poland, and Olga grew up in a working-class neighborhood. From an early age, Olga was exposed to the struggles of the working class, and she developed a strong sense of social justice.

In 1923, Olga joined the Communist Youth League. She quickly became a leader of the league, and she was soon recruited into the German Communist Party. Olga was a gifted orator and organizer, and she quickly rose through the ranks of the party.

Olga's Work with the Underground Resistance

In 1933, Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany. The Nazis quickly began to crack down on the Communist Party, and Olga was forced to go underground. She worked with the party's underground resistance, organizing meetings, distributing leaflets, and sabotaging Nazi property.

In 1934, Olga was arrested by the Gestapo. She was sentenced to eight years in prison for her role in the underground resistance. Olga was imprisoned in the Ravensbrück concentration camp for women. While in prison, she met and fell in love with Luiz Carlos Prestes, a Brazilian Communist leader who had been imprisoned for his role in a failed uprising.

Olga's Deportation to Brazil

In 1938, Olga was released from prison and deported to Brazil. She was met by Luiz Carlos Prestes, and the two of them soon married. Olga and Luiz Carlos continued to work for the Communist Party in Brazil, but they faced constant harassment from the government. In 1940, Olga was arrested again and imprisoned for several years.

After her release from prison, Olga continued to fight for social justice. She worked with her husband to organize the Brazilian Communist Party and to promote the rights of women and workers. In 1975, Olga was arrested again by the military dictatorship that had come to power in Brazil. She was tortured and killed in prison in 1976.

Olga's Legacy

Olga Benario Prestes was a remarkable woman who dedicated her life to fighting for a better world. She was a communist, a feminist, and a tireless advocate for social justice. Olga's legacy continues to inspire people today who fight for a more just and equitable world.
