By: Ervin Laszlo

In the darkest days of World War II, when the Nazis were carrying out their genocidal campaign against the Jews of Europe, one man stood up to them and saved over 100,000 lives. That man was Raoul Wallenberg.

Wallenberg was a Swedish diplomat who was sent to Budapest in 1944 to help the Swedish government protect its citizens and interests. However, Wallenberg quickly realized that the Nazis were planning to deport the Jews of Budapest to Auschwitz. He decided to do everything in his power to stop them.

Wallenberg began by issuing protective passports to Jews, which allowed them to travel freely and avoid being deported. He also established safe houses where Jews could hide from the Nazis. He even negotiated with the Nazis to allow Jews to leave Hungary for Sweden.

Wallenberg's efforts were extremely dangerous. He was constantly harassed and threatened by the Nazis, and he was even arrested and imprisoned for a time. However, he never gave up on his mission to save lives.

In January 1945, the Nazis finally occupied Budapest. Wallenberg was arrested and taken to a Soviet prison, where he disappeared. His fate is still unknown.

Despite his tragic end, Wallenberg's legacy lives on. He is remembered as one of the greatest heroes of the Holocaust, and his story continues to inspire people around the world.
