Early Life

Augustus was born Gaius Octavius in 63 BC. He was the grandnephew of Julius Caesar and was adopted by Caesar as his heir. Octavius was a sickly child, but he was intelligent and ambitious. He studied philosophy, rhetoric, and literature. He also received military training.

Rise to Power

After Caesar's assassination in 44 BC, Octavius allied himself with Mark Antony and Lepidus to form the Second Triumvirate. Octavius received the western provinces, including Gaul, Spain, and Africa.

Octavius declared war on Antony and Cleopatra in 31 BC. The two sides met at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC. Octavius's forces were victorious, and Antony and Cleopatra committed suicide.

Emperor of Rome

After Actium, Octavius was the undisputed master of Rome. He was granted the title of Augustus by the Roman Senate in 27 BC. Augustus was now the first emperor of Rome.
