Art Carney was an American actor, comedian, and singer who had a career that spanned over six decades. Carney was born Arthur William Matthew Carney on November 4, 1918, in Mount Vernon, New York. He began his career in vaudeville in the late 1930s, and later appeared in Broadway musicals such as Of Thee I Sing and Finian's Rainbow.

In 1955, Carney joined the cast of The Honeymooners, which became one of the most popular sitcoms in American television history. Carney played the role of Ed Norton, the lovable but often exasperated neighbor of Ralph Kramden (Jackie Gleason). The show ran for six seasons, and Carney received two Emmy Awards for his performance.

After The Honeymooners ended in 1963, Carney continued to appear in films and television shows. He starred in the 1968 film The Odd Couple with Walter Matthau, and in the 1974 film Harry and Tonto with Art Carney. Carney also appeared in a number of television shows, including The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, and Maude.

In 1983, Carney won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film The Last Hurrah. Carney continued to act until his death in 2003. He was 85 years old.
